Medicago sativa L., the Latin name for alfalfa or alfalfa, is a perennial plant that can reach heights of 30 to 100 cm and has characteristic spiny stems. It is an ancient plant, prized throughout the world, that can be recognized by its oval and lance-shaped leaves, gray-green color, and purple flowers gathered in pointed inflorescences.

Alfalfa is most commonly used in the form of powder (ground leaves), from which a variety of meals are prepared, but it can also be consumed on its own (as a beverage or nutritional supplement). Because of its exceptional properties, it has also been used for many years for the preparation of animal feed.
